Eugene B. Smith – Artist & Storyteller of the Shenandoah Valley

Largely self-taught, Eugene’s artistic journey began early with exposure to the Freer Gallery, sparking a lasting fascination with Asian art. That influence helped lead to his one-man exhibition in Okayama, Japan in 1997. Since then, Eugene has traveled extensively across the United States, participating in and drawing inspiration from a wide variety of art shows—his collection reflects the breadth of that journey, with imagery and sensibilities stretching from Maine to Florida. Still, Eugene often says that living in the Shenandoah Valley supplies an endless well of inspiration; his ability to capture the region’s landscapes and architecture has made him a beloved fixture in the local community.

Eugene’s roots in the area run deep. He moved with his family to Frederick County as a boy and is a graduate of both Lord Fairfax Community College and Shepherd College. He eventually built a home in Winchester with his wife Sarah and their two children, Kayla and Brennan. His children are now married with children of their own, earning Eugene another title – grandfather!

A true outdoorsman at heart, Eugene spends his free time kayaking, hiking, gardening, and fishing. Music is another passion—his nylon-string guitar is a regular presence at First Friday celebrations.
